Weevil: How To Get Rid Of Strawberries In The Garden, In The Apartment, Folk Remedies

The weevil beetle (Curcullionidae), also called the elephant beetle, is a member of a very large family with more than 70,000 species, most of which can be found in the tropics. In the mid-latitudes there are only about 5 thousand species. Weevils are considered pests of various plants. Interestingly, each species has its own preferences, for example, one of them damages vegetable crops, another - forest plants, the third - garden plants and so on. And there is also a type of beetle that damages the growth point of a palm tree, causing it to die.

Peculiarities of the weevil

Weevils can reach 0.1-3 centimeters in length, and tropical species sometimes grow up to 5 centimeters. These pests can have a variety of body shapes, such as oblong, rod-shaped, globular, pear-shaped, flat, cylindrical, rhombic or convex hemispherical. Coloration varies from black to yellow, sometimes the body has spots and may have metallic appearance. The body of the pest may be colored in one shade and its legs in another.

The upper part of the body may be naked or hairy; it may be covered with glaucous scales of brown or ground crust. The weevil has a characteristic feature - elongated front part of the head (head tube), which influenced the formation of the name of this insect genus.

All species are divided into 2 subspecies - long-tailed and short-tailed, which differ among themselves in the length of the head tube. In short-toothed species the larvae stay in the ground and eat plant roots, and in long-toothed species, as a rule, they live in tissues of various plants and feed on them. Species of weevils found in the middle latitudes most often inhabit berry crops; they are attracted by flower buds in which female plants oviposit.

Larvae after their emergence begin to eat away the flower from inside. Therefore, if there are too many pests, the gardener may not see berries at all. Even in the middle belt the barn weevil or house weevil may be encountered.

Barn weevil

Weevil: how to get rid of strawberries in the garden, in the apartment, folk remedies

The barn weevil is a small dark brown beetle with underdeveloped wings that grows up to 0.4 cm in length.

This pest is especially dangerous for grain crops. Archaeologists have found that such a pest has existed for a very long time. In the twentieth century, traces of the weevil were found in excavations of ancient Egyptian tombs, while in ancient Rome this bug was also known, and there it was called Curculio.

Aged adults damage grain as well as products made of it. One ovipositor laid by a female may contain about 300 eggs; larvae develop in wheat, oat, buckwheat, millet, rice (rice weevil), barley, and rye.

Another pest can live in flour and pasta. If such a pest appeared in the grain, then it becomes worthless. The fact is that if you eat it, it will cause digestive upset, as it becomes hygroscopic and begins to heat and rot on its own.

Home Weevil and Methods of Combat

Home Weevil

Home Weevil is the same barn weevil in grain, and it enters the apartment with groats brought from the store. The adult female gnaws a hole in the grain and lays just one egg, after which she covers the hole with her own excretions.

After 6-12 days, the larva emerges; it eats out the interior of the grain, then gnaws through the shell and goes out. The fight against the weevil is complicated by the fact that the larva inside the grain is quite difficult to detect. However, various methods have nevertheless been devised to control such a pest.

How to get rid of weevils

Weevil: how to get rid of strawberries in the garden, in the apartment, folk remedies

To get rid of weevils, which are polyphagous and very dangerous pests, any methods available should be used, namely physical, biological, preventive, chemical and folk methods.

Prevention

Barn weevil disinfection (disinfection may be by spray or wet disinfection) before putting the grain into storage.

Then the grain itself is prepared by drying it well, removing all weed impurities, and cooling it as much as possible. If there is such a need, the grain is treated with a contact insecticide preparation.

In gardens and vegetable gardens, where other species of weevil may live, prevention consists of loosening the soil surface around trees, removal of fallen leaves, sick and withered branches from the area. Also between the rows of vegetable or garden crops can be planted plants that repel this beetle. Also prophylactic treatment of crops with biological agent Fytoverm can be performed, and also birds (natural enemies of weevils) can be attracted to the area; to do this, hangers and birdhouses are placed in several places on trees.

If the pest still appeared before it starts mating, and the female begins to lay eggs, you must collect the insects, you can do it manually or under a tree or shrub spread a thick cloth and shake beetles on it. Then they are destroyed. If the number of insects is very large, treatment of crops with folk remedies or special powerful chemicals is required.

Chemicals

Use chemicals to control the pest in the room is very dangerous. But in the garden or vegetable garden they can help you save your crops.

Popular chemical preparations include:

  1. Kinmix. Use a solution to treat crops by combining 1 bucket of water and 2.5 milligrams of the product.
  2. Decis. Add 2 milligrams of the remedy to a bucket of water.

    The obtained solution is also treated on the affected plants.

  3. Fufanon, Iskra-M, Kemiphos, Carbaphos-500. To prepare a working solution 1 milligram of the preparation is taken per 1 liter of water.

The crops are sprayed with Fytoverm solution during vegetation period (2 milligrams of the preparation per liter of water). In summer, a solution of Fozalon or Bazudin is used to kill weevils that have settled on the trees (strictly follow the instructions on the package).

To kill the larvae of leaf weevil species, you need to treat the soil with Diazinon or Bazudin.

Natural remedies

When using chemicals in pest control you should remember that they can cause serious harm to human health. That is why many gardeners prefer to fight the pest with folk methods. For example, during the budding period, crops can be sprayed with one of the following solutions:

  • a bucket of water is mixed with 10-13 grams of dry mustard powder;
  • in a liter of water dissolve 4 grams of laundry soap ground on a grater;
  • a bucket of water is combined with 2.5-3 kilograms of wood ash;
  • 10 liters of water is combined with 5 grams of potassium permanganate;
  • grind 80 to 100 grams of laundry soap on a grater and dissolve it in warm water, then add to the mixture 200 grams of kerosene and 20 grams of borax and mix everything well to form an emulsion which is immediately sprinkled on the crops.

When you buy a strawberry weevil may become established in the house. In order to get rid of it, you can use one of the simple but effective methods of fighting such a beetle, which are based on the characteristics of its life and reproduction:

  1. First you should carefully inspect all the cereals you have, as well as cocoa, tea, coffee, flour and pasta, where the beetle may settle. If you find signs of its presence, try to destroy the infected products as quickly as possible, since both larvae and adult excretions are carcinogenic.
  2. While a drop in temperature to just minus 5 degrees leads to the death of both adults and larvae of the weevil, for preventive purposes uninfected products may be placed in the freezer for two or three days. Also as a preventive measure, all freshly purchased cereals, pasta, and flour may be placed in the freezer for a while.

  3. An increase in temperature to 40 degrees leads to the death of the beetles, and they will all die only if this temperature is maintained for 48 hours. To get rid of the pest in just 6 hours, the product where it is located should be heated to 60 degrees and it can be done in an oven.
  4. To store disinfected groats it is recommended to use tightly closed containers made of plastic or glass because the pest will not be able to chew through them. Put peeled garlic cloves in containers where pasta and cereals are kept, a small amount of hot pepper may be placed in beans and peas and two or three nutmeg in flour.
  5. Shelves or surfaces on which cereals, pasta or flour are stored should be washed systematically with soap and water mixed with table vinegar as preventive measure.

    When treatment is complete place several bay leaves, cloves or lavender flowers on the surface.

  6. Performers advise not to stock excessively large quantities of food in which the pest may settle unless strictly necessary.

Strawberry Weevil

The weevil is a long-tailed black and gray colored bug that measures about 0.3 cm. In the springtime, individuals mate in flower buds where larvae then develop.

Today there are many effective methods of controlling the strawberry weevil that can save up to 40 percent of the crop even with very severe infestation. Start fighting the insect as early as possible, this increases your chances of "winning".

In the springtime, when the air temperature is still uncomfortable for the beetle, you should spray the area where the strawberry grows with one of the following solutions:

  • 10 liters of water combined with 1 tsp. 1 tsp iodine;
  • dissolve three Intra-vir weevil pills in a bucket of water.

The first spraying must take place after 5 or 6 days before flowering.

The second treatment is done in mid-summer. Strawberries and garden strawberries can also be sprayed with such biological preparations as Namabakt or Entonem-F. Until the last days of spring, bushes can also be treated with chemicals such as Iskra-bio, Fitoverm or Akarin. The most powerful insecticides (such as Actellic, Carbophos or Metaphos) are not recommended for strawberry treatment.

Simple ways to get rid of the strawberry weevil

Cherry weevil

Weevil: how to get rid of strawberries in the garden, in the apartment, folk remedies

The cherry weevil, also called the cherry borer or the cherry trumpet weevil.

It can harm not only cherry, but also pest settles on plum, cherry plum, cherry, apricot and hawthorn. This greenish-golden beetle can vary in length from 0.55 to 1 centimeter, it has purple metallic tint. White larvae have sparse red hairs on the surface, their heads are brown, and their mouthparts are brown. Such bugs damage generative organs of stone fruit crops, and they do it in early spring before sap starts moving, resulting in plant buds drying up and flying off.

Because of invasion of such pest the gardener risks not only to stay without harvest, but it can also cause the death of the trees themselves.

Specialists advise to fight cherry weevil by all available means, namely: preventive, folk, agrotechnical, biological and even chemical ones. For example:

  1. In autumn, tree trunks should be freed from peeling old bark. All wooden plant remains shall be destroyed and the surface of the stem shall be treated with a solution of lime.
  2. The area around the tree and the surface of the tree root stock shall be cleaned of foliage that shall be burnt or thrown onto a compost heap.

  3. The ground in the root stock shall be thoroughly shovelled.
  4. When the buds are swelling white paper or fabric shall be spread under the tree and the pests shall be rubbed off on it. They are then destroyed.
  5. When the fruit is ripe the fruit must be picked and destroyed regularly to prevent the larvae from going into the ground.
  6. When the tree is in bloom examine it carefully.

    If you find more than eight pests, then spray the plant with any of the chemicals described above.

The plum weevil

Weevil: how to get rid of strawberries in the garden, in the apartment, folk remedies

This beetle is about 4.5 centimeters long and is colored bronze with a metallic sheen. The entire surface of the pest has thick, short hairs. This insect is also referred to as a copper pipeworm because of its appearance.

It can settle both on plums and on apricots, cherries, thorns, cherries, apples, mountain ash, hawthorns and currants. Adults consistently damage buds, buds, flowers, pedicels, young fruits, and leaves. Larvae develop inside fruits. This insect is treated in the same way as cherry weevil. Pyrethroids and organophosphorus compounds such as Fufanon, Actellic or Bazudin are most effective in this case.

Malberry Weevil

Weevil: how to get rid of strawberries in the garden, in the apartment, folk remedies

Malberry is harmed by the same type of weevil as strawberry. Female raspberries are most severely harmed by the weevil. Thus, one female strawberry weevil in one season may damage about three dozen buds by laying eggs in them. After 6-7 days larvae emerge from eggs and eat away at the flower from inside for 20 days. For prevention, the same measures should be taken as described in detail above.

However, if the pest still appeared on the raspberry, then to get rid of it, it is best to use folk remedies.

If there are very many pests on the raspberry, then during the budding, treat the plants with a solution of means Taran. Before the raspberry blossoms and after harvesting, it is recommended to treat it with insecticidal preparations such as Carbofos, Novaktion, Fufanon Expert or Iskra-M. Throughout the growing season, raspberry bushes can be sprayed with Alatar against weevils. Before using chemicals, read the instructions and do not forget safety precautions.

Nut weevil

Weevil: how to get rid of strawberries in the garden, in the apartment, folk remedies

Nut weevil, also called nut weevil, is a brown-colored beetle reaching 0.7 to 1 centimeter in length. In the last days of April females of this weevil lay eggs in immature hazelnuts. After larvae emerge from the eggs, they begin to eat away the nut pulp, which can lead to the loss of half the crop. This pest most often settles on a nut if there is high humidity for a long time, and the average daily temperature is about 19 degrees Celsius.

In order to prevent this pest, the soil in the rootstem circle should be necessarily recultivated to the depth of the bayonet of the spade, and also do not forget to collect and destroy the fallen on the ground and worm fruits in a timely manner. In order to get rid of such a pest it is necessary to spray a solution of Actellic or Fufanon (2%) on the buds before female plants start laying eggs.

Pine weevils

Weevil: how to get rid of strawberries in the garden, in the apartment, folk remedies

Big pine weevil, also called spruce weevil, is a dark brown beetle having length from 0.7 to 1.4 centimeters.

Adult insects harm firs and pines 3 to 6 years old by stripping the bark to the sapwood. The resulting wounds fuse together and are covered with resinous sap, as a result, the trunk becomes resinous, and this leads to the death of the tree. Such species may also harm deciduous trees located not far from spruce or pine trees, such as alder, oak, birch, etc.

Also two other species of weevils may harm coniferous trees, namely blue pine and pine weevils. The pine weevil (pine elephant weevil) is very dangerous for coniferous forests, they injure wood bark, which leads to plant death.

The body of such a brown beetle has a pair of longitudinal stripes consisting of yellowish dots. The blue pine weevil has a blue coloration. It gnaws out small holes in young coniferous shoots where it makes its ovipositions. Their larvae gnaw into the wood, where they make holes and pupate. Coniferous trees can suffer from both larvae and adult insects.

Crows, crows, starlings, woodpeckers, magpies and jays are natural enemies of all species of weevils, so it is recommended to attract them to your site. Also such insects are fed by marmots and beetles. To get rid of pests that have settled on coniferous trees, treatment with a chemical is needed. For this purpose, plants are sprayed with a solution of Metaphos, Carbophos, Actellic or other preparations of similar action during the period of mass infestation of pests.
