Most amateur flower growers think it's easy to tell if an orchid's root is dead or alive. It seems to them that all they have to do is just assess its color and that's it. Thus, they are convinced that the healthy live roots will have a light color, and those that died - dark. But this is far from it. The fact is that the color of the roots in different species and varieties can be different, both light and dark.
Because of this, the condition of the root system of such a flower cannot be determined by its color.
Special features of orchids with light-colored roots
The outer surface of the root is white, but inside it is empty
Many beginner florists, not having enough experience, believe that the light-colored roots indicate that they are healthy and alive. However, if you cut such a root in some cases, you can see that it is completely dry and empty inside.
If a root is yellow
In some cases, roots that are deep in the substrate can become yellow and in some cases brownish over time. This is because they lack sunlight.
Also, the color of the root system can be affected by the substances that the plant absorbs from the substrate. In this case, the lack of light does not mean that the roots are sick or dead.
How do you tell if an orchid's roots are dead or alive?
Touch the root. In case it is quite hard and firm, it means that it is alive. If you press on the root and it squeezes, it is no longer viable even though it might look healthy.
It also happens that when you examine the root system you can see an apparently healthy root, but it only has a necrotic area in one place. This root should be removed because it is no longer able to nourish the flower properly. Also, this affected root can cause the orchid to become infected. Because of this, the root system of such a plant should be inspected very carefully and all diseased roots must be removed.
A large number of flower growers believe that the orchid is not worth worrying about, if its green part above the soil surface is green, then the whole plant is absolutely healthy.
However, this is an erroneous opinion. The fact is that in the root system pathogenic processes do not pass very quickly, and therefore even if it is sick, the green part of the plant will be reflected only after some time. A preventive inspection of the orchid root system is therefore very important, since diseased roots can be found in time to remove them.
Why are the roots of an orchid dying off?
The main causes are:
- not following the care instructions for this plant, that is: insufficient or excessive light, over wetting the substrate, drying the earth too much in the heat;
- the plant is infected by a bacterial or fungal infection;
- the orchid is very old.
What should be done if dead roots are found?
What should be done first is to take care of the plant by following all the rules.
Such a flower can only be "brought back to life" by placing it in the conditions that are most suitable for it. A young root system can only grow if there are new shoots. And in order for them to appear, you just need green buds, which must necessarily be alive. Therefore, it is necessary to try to find such buds.

Orchid root treatment
The root system of a diseased plant should be immersed in water for some time every day. So, once you have immersed the roots in a container of water, you should move it to a window sill. It is best to carry out this procedure at a temperature of about 20 degrees.
Each day in the morning time you need to add as much water to the container, so that it was completely covered with the roots of plants. This plant should be in the water for 1-2 hours, but even longer "bathing" it will not hurt.
To ensure that the dormant buds wake up, it is recommended to use baths with the addition of drugs that stimulate growth. Thus, it is recommended to pour only 1 drop of epin into a liter of water. However, you should be careful not to do such baths too often.
So, 2 baths a month will be more than enough.
How quickly will the flower recover? In each case it is individual. So, it may take 1 or 2 months in one case and 9-10 months in another, and some flowers never recover despite all efforts. If you start to regenerate your flower in the spring or fall, you have a much better chance of success.
The orchid has young roots
The orchid has young roots, what to do next?
After you have discovered young roots, you should not feed the plant more from that day.
As a rule, such roots grow and develop very fast. When the new roots will be five centimeters long, the orchid can be planted in the pot. It should be noted that watering the plant should be moderate, you should not allow overwatering of the soil. Water only when the substrate has dried very well.
Middle as well as coarse coniferous tree bark, sphagnum moss and a small amount of fine charcoal are best for these flowers.
Fix the plant in the new container to avoid damaging the young, fragile roots. To do this, stick two sticks in the soil and tie the flower to them.
You can also use the greenhouse method to restore this plant. A greenhouse can be purchased in a store or made with plastic bottles or from an aquarium.
