Maple: Planting And Care, Varieties With Photos, Propagation And Pruning

This tree, Acer platanoides, or sycamore maple, is a species of maple commonly found in Europe and Western Asia. The southern border of its habitat reaches northern Iran, while the northern border ends at the southern regions of Scandinavia, Finland and Karelia. This tree prefers to grow alone or in small groups in deciduous and mixed forests.

Peculiarities of the maple tree

The maple tree is about 30 meters tall, sometimes it can be higher. The surface of the trunk is covered by cracked bark of a grayish-brownish, almost black color.

The bark on young branches is grayish-red and relatively smooth. The shape of the crown is rounded. Branches are powerful, broad and pointing downward. Simple lobed leaf blades supronate, with coarsely serrated lobes (sometimes from 5 to 7) pointed at the ends. The front side of the leaves is dark green, while the reverse side is light green.

Leaf blades turn orange or yellow in the fall. If the petioles or veins of leaves are broken, milky colored sap will appear in the place of damage. Flowering occurs in the first half of May. Its inflorescences are made up of 15 to 30 scented, greenish-yellow flowers. This tree is a dioecious plant, so it may have either male or female flowers.

Pollination is due to insects. The nectar has a flat ring shape, with the bases of the stamens immersed in it. It is placed between the petals and the ovary. The fruit is a winglet, which disintegrates into two one-seeded fruits. The fruits ripen in the last days of summer and may remain on the branches until the end of winter.

The Oriental maple is a good honeybee.

This tree is similar in appearance to another species, namely the sugar maple or Canadian maple. These plants can be easily distinguished by the color of the sap that is released from the petioles, so, in sugar maple it is transparent. It also has less rough bark than sugar maple, and in the fall its leaves are less grainy. Sharp-leaved maple's leaf blades are more flared.

Sharp-leaved maple buds are light red while sugar maple ones are deep green.

Springinging maple

planting maple in the ground is recommended in the early spring or fall. When choosing a location for planting, note that the distance between the plant and any other plant should be at least 2.5 to 3 meters. If maples are used to create a hedge, you should keep a distance of 2 meters between them.

For planting, choose a well-lit area or one that is in a light penumbra. The soil should be well drained. Digging a hole, you should consider that its depth should be identical to the height of the root ball. At the same time, the width of the hole should be made 4 times greater than the rootball. In case the groundwater on the site is too close to the surface of the ground, the depth of the pit should be increased, as at its bottom it will be necessary to make a drainage layer, the thickness of which should be at least 15 centimeters.

To create this layer, you can use crushed stone, broken bricks or sift.

The root system of the seedling should on no account dry out before planting. Therefore, it is recommended to immerse it in a container of water for a few hours.

Filling the planting hole should use a nutrient mixture consisting of humus (peat compost), sand and turf soil (3:1:2). First, 120 to 150 grams of Nitroammophoska should be poured into the hole, only then the root ball of the seedling is placed in it.

When the roots are neatly spread out, the pit should be filled with the nutrient mixture. After planting, the root neck of the plant should be a few centimeters above the surface of the plot. The planted maple should be watered, using 30 liters of water for this purpose. After the liquid is completely absorbed, the root neck of the seedling should sink to the surface of the plot. Do not forget in the first days after planting to mulch the root circle of the tree, using dry soil or peat, the thickness of the layer should be within 3-5 centimeters.

Maintenance of maple maple

Newly planted maple need frequent watering. Even after the plant has grown strong and mature, it still needs regular watering, especially during the summer months. In the spring and autumn watering the tree once every 4 weeks, and in the summer time this procedure is carried out once every 7 days. When watering a young plant should take 40 liters of water, but if the tree is mature, it will be enough 20 liters. But note that if the color of the leaves of the tree has become pale green, it is a sign that the soil is very overwatered.

If the plant feels the lack of water, it has a droopy leaf plate. After watering you should systematically loosen the surface of the root zone and at the same time pull the weed out.

If all the necessary fertilizers have been applied to the planting hole then there is no need to fertilize the plants before the end of the current season. After spring arrives, the maple should be fertilized, for this purpose, the surface of the rootstock should be covered with a three-inch layer of decomposed manure. Also for feeding, you can use special tablets with a slow release of nutrients.

They should be placed in the root zone. From the beginning of vegetation period to the end of spring such feeding should be done once in 2 weeks, in summer it is done once in 4 weeks, in autumn it is not necessary to feed maple trees.

This dormant period begins with the first frosts and lasts until March. If the maple is still young, it will need good shelter for the winter. Its trunk should be wrapped with burlap, which is fixed with rope.

This will protect the plant from severe frosts, and from rodents. The root neck of the plant should always be covered with lapnik. As the plant gets older, it will become more frost hardy and you will not have to cover it for the winter.

Trimming

Clear maple trees only need trimming to remove all branches and stems that are frosty, injured or dried out or have been damaged by diseases or pests. You must also cut out all the root shoots.

If desired, you can shorten the stems which stick out in different directions and also remove shoots growing into the crown. No trimming is necessary as the natural spherical shape of the maple is very attractive without it.

Diseases and pests

If the branches start to die off and small maroon-colored spots appear on the bark, this indicates coral blotch infection. Those branches that are affected should definitely be cut and destroyed, and the cut places should be smeared with garden varnish. Garden tools should be disinfected both before and after pruning.

Pests on maple can include whiteflies, mealybugs, and leaf weevils. Branches infested by whitefly larvae should be trimmed and destroyed, and then the plant should be treated with Ammophos. As a preventive against mealybugs, treat maple leaves with Nitrafen until the buds swell. To get rid of weevils, the tree should be treated by leaf with Chlorophos solution, which is prepared strictly according to the instructions.

Several propagation of maple maple

Seed propagation

The maple leaf is quite simple to propagate by seeds.

They are sown in the fall in a seedbed and will undergo natural stratification over the winter. In the spring the seedlings will appear, they will only need to seed. Sow the seeds if desired, you can in March, but before that they will need to stratify. Pour the seeds into a container filled with moistened sand and leave it in the fridge on the vegetable shelf for 5-7 days.

How to propagate by aerial plucking

Maple: planting and care, varieties with photos, propagation and pruning

Select the branch from which you are going to make aerial plucking.

Take a sterilised knife and make a few cuts in the surface of the bark, which should be oblique. The cuts should then be treated with a root-stimulating substance (Kornevin or Heteroauxin). To prevent the edges of the cuts from sticking together, place some Styrofoam granules in the cuts. The cuts are then covered with moistened moss, this part of the branch should be wrapped with a polyethylene bag, which is tightly fixed just above and below the wounds. The bag should then be covered with aluminum foil or a canvas cloth to prevent the sun from shining on it.

In time, young roots will emerge from the cuts and grow into the moistened moss. With the onset of the next spring, when the growing season begins, you will need to separate the scion from the tree by carefully removing the cloth or foil and removing the bag. The moss does not need to be removed and the graft should be planted in the open soil with it.

Rootstock propagation

Maple: planting and care, varieties with photos, propagation and pruning

Some cuts should be made in the propagated rootstock with a sharp knife, and these should be as close to the surface of the plot as possible. The wounds should then be treated with a product that promotes root growth, and then the shoot should be high up (the wounds should be covered with soil).

Throughout the growing season, ensure that the brood is systematically watered and mounded. After the following spring, the brood will be ready to be detached and transplanted permanently as it develops its own root system.

Spicy maple varieties with photos and names

The spicy maple has a large number of varieties and several decorative forms.

Gardeners prefer to grow globular maples, which are slow growing trees and grafted onto the rootstock or tripod, giving the plant a shrub-like appearance. The stem form is used as a solitary planting or to create an alley. To decorate the lawn, grafting is usually done at the root of the maple. There is a lanerepartite form - it is a very beautiful tree, which has dark green leaf plates divided to the base. There is another form, Drummond maple, which has pink leaves when it blooms and then turns white, and is very beautiful.

The Golden Globe tree has a spherical crown and gold-colored leaves.

The most popular varieties:

Gardeners in countries like Germany, England and Holland enjoy quite a lot of popularity for large trees with foliage that has mottled or rich coloration. And since there are many varieties of maple, gardeners have a lot to choose from. For example, if the slope of a mountain or a ravine is decorated with such trees with yellow, purple or variegated leaves, it will look like a fairy tale decoration.

If you want to decorate the garden or cottage, then you better select the variety Crimson King. Even one such tree will make your site extremely colourful, and if you put it together with other shrubs and trees, you can make your garden or cottage a unique beautiful place. Of course, to make a successful composition will require some knowledge, because you will need to consider the color combination of plants and their future size. However, the end result is certainly worth your efforts.
